In my story about Dale Ashby and Len Ognibene, there’s a scene with Jerry Jeff that got me wondering about Luckenbach in 1973 and whether or not it would’ve been on the map:
Walker: “Could you drive this studio to Texas?”
Ashby’s forehead wrinkles. “Uh, sure.”
“How ‘bout Luckenbach, Texas?”
“Well, if it’s on the map, we’ll get there.”
Now, obviously Dale and Len got there, and Dale said they found it on the map, but according to Len:
When we got there, we were hunting Fredericksburg, not Luckenbach. … We didn’t try to find Luckenbach first, which would have been, I would think, a more difficult situation.
So I went to eBay and found myself a vintage 1973 map (from nearby Comfort, no less!):
And, lo and behold, no Luckenbach:
